Hagerstown's Mercedes Takes Best Pitcher Prize Tuesday, September 13th , 2005 The votes are in for the 2005 South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year Award. It has been bestowed on Gabriel Mercedes of the Hagerstown Suns. The 22-year-old Suns ace finished the year with a 12-5 mark, logged 27 starts, threw 150 innings, yielded 97 hits, struck out 158 and held the opposition to a .180 batting average. He received 14 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Brandon Goltz of the Beloit Snappers finished second in voting, while Ricky Shefka of the Lansing Lugnuts finished third.
