Mateo Twirls No-Hitter Against Intimidators
Sunday, August 1st , 2004
The Charleston AlleyCats relied on no-hit stuff from starter Juan Mateo to defeat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 7-0, at Watt Powell Park.
"It's quite a thrill," Mateo told the media afterward. "This is a top-notch league. A no-hitter against any team in the league is something special. I can't believe I did it."
To get his name logged in the Midwest League records, he stopped Kannapolis cold and hitless, surrendering 3 walks and fanning 9 of the 30 batters he faced.
Charleston manager Christian Jones was in a jovial mode after the game, kidding with reporters that Mateo "made managing easy today."
"I didn't have hardly any decisions to make like I usually do," he said. "I didn't even have to come up with a pinch hitter."
This year, Mateo has a 7-7 record with a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts.
