Razor-Sharp Welch Blanks Birmingham
Thursday, May 26th , 2005
The Huntsville Stars shut out the Birmingham Barons, 5-0, behind the strong pitching of David Welch. Welch surrendered only 1 hit in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 10.
Following the last out, Welch appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Birmingham manager Jason Spiwak, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken left-hander as the clubs left the field. Welch's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.
The Barons skipper would not comment on the exchange but, at the Stars press conference, Welch confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.
"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Welch said.
"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Huntsville manager Brian Morris added.
This year, Welch has worked 62.1 innings with 49 strikeouts en route to a 3-2 record and 2.74 ERA.
