Thurmond Twirls No-Hitter Against Durham
Friday, May 20th , 2005
Richmond Braves starter Ben Thurmond said he was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew: He was one out from a no-hitter. For a couple of seconds, he didn't move.
"I took a breath and told myself 'This is the last one,'" Thurmond recalled.
The right-hander collected himself, got the final out, and finished one of the greatest performances of his career.
The Richmond right-hander no-hit the Durham Bulls, 3-0, at The Diamond, finishing with 2 walks and 12 strikeouts, facing only 29 batters.
"I knew for a while it was a no-hitter," Thurmond admitted later. "But I really didn't worry about it until the last out. I thought I just wanted to win the game, and then I realized I wanted the no-hitter, too."
Thus far this season, Thurmond has posted a 5-3 record, started 11 games, struck out 65 batters in 65 innings and compiled a 3.32 ERA.
