Mariners Top Mets in Extras, 9-3
|
Seattle starter Freddy Garcia pitched well against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. The right-hander led his team to a win, 9-3, in 10 innings. The win went to Dave Borkowski in relief, making him now 3-3. Bob Wickman took the loss for New York. Seattle now sits at 23-31, while New York falls to 22-32.
The game was at a stalemate until center fielder Trot Nixon came to bat in the top of the tenth. Facing New York pitcher Bob Wickman, he hit a first pitch cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Seattle on top, 4-3.
"Our team showed some gumption," said Garcia. "I like it."
