Getting a good performance from third baseman David Wright, the New York Mets defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 4-0. Wright slugged 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice for the Mets. Randy Johnson got the win, improving to 2-5. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 7 hits and no runs, while striking out 4 and walking 0. The last-place Devil Rays have lost 4 consecutive games.

The game turned with one out in the bottom of the fourth. That's when Wright hit a solo home run off Phil Akens. It propelled the Mets into the lead, 1-0.

"If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said New York manager Bobby Valentine.
