Red Sox Victorious at Cleveland, 4-2
|
Boston Red Sox starter John Smoltz hurled his team past the Cleveland Guardians, 4-2. Smoltz, now 14-4, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 5, walking 1, and allowing 2 runs. Jose Acevedo converted his 32nd save in 38 tries.
John Olerud came through with a big-time hit for Boston. The first baseman smacked a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give his team the lead, 4-2. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.
Cleveland manager Charlie Manuel said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
The win gives Boston a season record of 85-59.
