Atlanta turned a fine outing from starter Andy Pettitte into a victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field. The final score was 6-1. Pettitte yielded 1 run over 7.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. His record improves to 6-1. The Braves raised their record to 78-56.

Herb Patterson had a big run-scoring double for the Braves in the top of the fourth inning. With Atlanta leading 3-1 and a runner on 1st, he got a slider from 23-year old right-handed pitcher James Shields and swatted a double to right. It was his 30th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Braves ahead, 4-1.

Patterson called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
