The Pittsburgh Pirates faced a tough opponent in New York pitcher Russ Ortiz, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Shea Stadium by a final score of 4-2. Ortiz went 7.2 innings and allowed 1 run. The winner was Brandon Lyon in relief. His record improves to 5-3. Jason Grilli took the loss. The win gives Pittsburgh a season record of 67-53.

Pittsburgh needed the clutch hitting of Melvin Upton Jr. to seal the deal. The shortstop swatted a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Pirates on top, 4-2. For the game, Upton Jr. had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"We're all about heart and hustle on this team. That's what wins ballgames," Upton Jr. told the Pittsburgh Herald.
